Watch Gruff Rhys and Bill Ryder-Jones cover Yuki Saitou at End of the Road
Before their back-to-back sets at End of the Road Festival last week, Gruff Rhys and Bill Ryder-Jones – two of the UK's most beloved songwriters – dropped in to play a Best Fit secret session with a cover of Yuki Saitou's "Why".
"Is there only darkness when we die?" asks the song's emotional refrain – delivered with a comforting lilt by Rhys, and turned into a singalong by the close of the song.
After dropping critically acclaimed albums just weeks apart (Iechyd Da and Sadness Sets You Free), the pair took the logical step to take to the road together with full bands in tow for a bunch of dates kicking off on 18 November in Dublin. Headliners will switch each night, with both artists playing a full headline length set.
Rhys and Ryder-Jones joined the likes of Samia, Angel Olsen, Future Islands, Caitlin Rose and The Anchoress who all played for Best Fit's Secret Sessions during last year's event. The sessions have become a key part of End of the Road each year, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exclusive covers, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As.
