Taylor Swift's Midnights is the highest rated album of 2022 so far on Metacritic
Taylor Swift's tenth album Midnights, which is out today (21 October), is currently the highest rated album of the year on Metacritic.
Prior to today (21 October), Rosalía's MOTOMAMI was ranked highest on Metacritic's albums of 2022 list with a score of 94, but Taylor Swift's tenth album Midnights has been placed above MOTOMAMI, despite having the same score.
The Independent gave Midnights full marks, with writer Helen Brown calling it Swift's "darkest and most cryptic album yet." The Guardian and Rolling Stone also awarded the album with five stars, and Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos, who taught a Taylor Swift course at NYU's Clive Davis Institute earlier this year, wrote that it "picks up where the pure pop triptych of 1989, Reputation, and Lover left off, a dazzling bath of synths complementing lyrics caught between a love story and a revenge plot."
NME, DIY and The Telegraph all gave Midnights four stars. NME's Hannah Mylrea wrote that it offers "up brighter, future-facing sounds," while The Telegraph's Neil McCormick noted that it "represents Swift at a turning point."
Earlier today Swift unveiled the "special very chaotic surprise" that was teased at the start of the week, and it's a 3am Edition of Midnights featuring seven bonus songs. Swift will unveil the first Midnights music video for "Anti-Hero" at 1pm BST today.
