Vintage Swoon, Gamecore, and Cinematic Dubstep among fastest-rising genres of the year
Spotify has released a whole bunch of interesting data to round up a rather busy 2017.
As well as revealing some titbits we all already knew - Ed Sheeran's Divide was the most streamed album worldwide, he's still the most streamed artist etc. - some less obvious pieces of info have also surfaced.
For starters, Dua Lipa is the UK's most streamed female artist and Latin music streams have increased 110% in a year - boosted primarily by "Despacito" and "Mi Gente"'s incredible success. Grime is still on the up too, and Eminem continues to defy expectations (he was the fourth most-played artist in the UK this year).
But arguably the most fascinating part of the data dump is Spotify's 'Emerging 2017 Genres' list. Apparently the biggest winners this year were niche subgenres of black metal, mishmashed hip-hop styles, abstract art music, and noises such as 'vintage swoon'. Will this continue in 2018? Grime has been the champion of the past few years, but could the crown be snatched by 'gamecore' next year?
Spotify's Emerging 2017 Genres
- Melodic Power Metal
- Chaotic Black Metal
- Chillhop
- Trap Latino
- Future Funk
- Jumpstyle
- Serialism
- Cinematic Dubstep
- Vintage Swoon
- Gamecore
Spotify has found that these 10 styles have seen the biggest increase in listens from 2016 to 2017. To find this data Spotify looked at all genre figures and divided the 2017 listening numbers by the 2016 listening numbers to find a ratio, and then ranked by that.
As well as all this, Spotify have launched a new end-of-year feature so that you can find out your own most-streamed artists and songs of 2017.
