Kara Marni samples Dusty Springfield’s “Spooky” on evocative slow jam “Curve”
Following powerful debut “Golden”, Kara Marni returns with “Curve”; a seamless blend of ‘60s blue-eyed soul and late-night R&B.
Like Tamia through a vintage oscillator, Kara Marni’s latest endeavour "Curve" is a reflection of her unique and complex sound. Drawing on influences as far ranging as Dionne Warwick, The Supremes, and Amy Winehouse, the 19-year old has already made a name for herself as an exciting international export prospect in the same vein as recent global stars Dua Lipa and Charli XCX.
“Curve” is a fine example of modern intelligent R&B that borrows from time-honoured classics but retains a sense of pushing boundaries and remaining relevant. Sampling a song as beloved as Dusty Springfield’s “Spooky” is a risky endeavour at the best of times but it really does work in this instance and the move is applaudable.
2017 saw Kara Marni collaborate with the likes of MNEK, Sebastian Kole and Invisible Men whilst touring with Ray BLK and finding her feet sonically and stylistically. If “Curve” is anything to go by 2018 will be the year that Kara takes her place amongst pop’s elite.
